"--This is unacceptable!"

Barry's voice echoes throughout the entire mountain, or at least that's how it seems to Wally who is standing just close enough to the door to hear what's going on. Batman hasn't spoken audibly since he went into the room, although that doesn't mean that he hasn't spoken at all. The situation and the fact that Wally can only hear about a quarter of the conversation are making for a very tense hallway.

Not to mention the fact that the rest of the team is standing right behind him. They are all crowded near the door with him, listening in and occasionally giving Wally and Dick confused looks. Only Artemis seems to have any idea what's going on, and Wally realizes with a start that the rest of the team has none of the cultural background to know why Barry is so pissed.

Superboy was born in a tube and M'gann picked her gender out of a hat, after all. Wally isn't sure what the sexual politics are like in Atlantis but Kaldur's lack of reaction seems to tell him that they are just fine with same-sex couples.

Wally wishes that he were as cool about all of this.

"--am I supposed to tell his father?" Barry's voice carries.

Wally's fingers entangle with Dick's and he squeezes until his knuckles turn white. His breathing is shaky. He wants to run, but he's pretty sure that most everyone would frown on that sort of behavior.

"I don't understand." M'gann says after a moment of silence, "Why didn't you tell us that you were dating?"

She probably would have baked them a cake, Wally realizes.

Wally doesn't know what to say, "I..."

"Yeah." Artemis butts in, "Not that I'm particularly interested, but you didn't think we would be the sort of assholes who would--"

"--Overreacting?! I'm responsible for--"

Wally winces.

"Lay off." Dick says from Wally's side, "It's not like this is the easiest thing in the world, okay?"

"Yeah." Artemis growls, "Like 'hey guys, we're banging' is so hard to say."

Dick opens his mouth to shoot back but Wally stops him, looking around at his team and understanding, finally, that they really wouldn't have minded at all.

"I was scared, okay?" He says, "I didn't know how to bring it up and I didn't know how you guys would react and it freaked me out."

"You have no idea what it's like." Dick points out for them and, for a moment, it looks as though Artemis is going to contradict them but she seems to change her mind. "Wally's dad--"

Wally feels himself flinch again.

"I don't understand." Superboy says, "Why is the Flash shouting? I thought teenagers were supposed to date."

"The problem is that Robin and Kid Flash are of the same sex." Kaldur explains in his 'leader voice'. Dick coughs something that sounds a little bit like 'gender' while Superboy puzzles over this new revelation.

Everything is quiet. And it occurs to Wally that there hasn't been any shouting from the room in quite a while.

"Well," M'gann says, "I think it's great that you two are together."

The rest of the team nods and Wally feels a little bit like his chest has expanded. The force of their acceptance making him light and whole.

He's smiling just a little when Barry opens the door. The team moves back, trying to pretend as though they weren't eavesdropping, but Barry doesn't seem particularly concerned with what they had been doing.

"Kid Flash." Barry says. Wally wonders, for a moment, if everything Barry says after this will have the same tone of weary confusion, if Barry will ever joke with him, laugh with him, be his partner again.

It feels a little bit like a universe of difference has suddenly appeared between them.

"I don't-- Batman and I talked and-- Gosh, Kid, I wish you'd just told me about this."

"I didn't know how." Wally's voice cracks.

"You want to give it a shot now?"

Wally sends a look over to the rest of his team, all giving him supporting smiles, and shuffles his feet. He want's to run away.

"Flash." He says, "I'm g-gay. I'm dating Robin."

Barry smiles. It's tense and forced, but it's a smile nonetheless. "Thank you for telling me, Kid."

"Uh, you're not going to tell my dad or anything are you?"

Barry snorts, "You get to deliver that message yourself. Preferably after you've graduated from college. I mean, you're dad is a wonderful and caring man but..."

Wally sighs, "Yeah."

It's a little awkward when Barry hugs him goodbye, and the comment about 'staying safe' is something that Wally will always remember with horror. But it's not so bad, not the end of the world.

The look Batman is giving him from behind his cowl might be the end of the world, but Wally is going to deal with that when he comes to it.

Soon enough the team is alone and Wally is feeling a little bit like he's had every possible emotion squeezed out of his body. His muscles feel loose.

He doesn't, really, feel like running anywhere at the moment. Instead, Wally looks down at his hand, intertwined with Dick's, and smiles.

"Well that was horrible." He says with a grimace.

"You're telling me." Dick agrees before turning to the group at large, "Hey, while we're on the subject of horrible and embarrassing revelations..."

They're still holding hands. And that's pretty much all Wally could want.
